Line Boring Hydraulic Cylinder Hinge Pins | Marine & Shipbuilding Case Study

Client: Cammell Laird
Industry: Marine & Shipbuilding
Location: United Kingdom
Duration: 1 Day
Service: Onsite Line Boring

Overview

Royce Onsite Machining was mobilised to the United Kingdom to carry out precision corrective machining on the stern door hydraulic cylinder hinge pins (port and starboard).

The hinge pin bores exhibited severe scoring and an uneven diameter profile, which compromised the integrity and alignment of the component. Maintaining precise alignment throughout the repair was critical.

Because oversize pins were not permitted by the OEM, the original bore diameter had to be restored within strict tolerance limits.

Royce Onsite Machining worked closely with the OEM engineering team to ensure that all machining procedures, tolerances, and quality standards were achieved. The entire repair was completed onsite, avoiding costly removal and transport of the component.

Work Carried Out

The following corrective machining operations were performed onsite:

  • Machined 5 mm from each bore diameter to remove damaged material
  • Manufactured and installed precision sleeves to restore the bore dimensions
  • Sleeves welded and securely fixed into position
  • Maintained centreline alignment throughout the entire process
  • Conducted final finish machining to OEM tolerances
  • Completed quality verification and dimensional checks

All work was completed onsite, eliminating the need for offsite machining and significantly reducing operational downtime.

Technical Highlights

  • Precision onsite line boring machining performed using Royce Onsite Machining equipment
  • Final machining completed within strict OEM tolerance limits
  • OEM surface finish requirements achieved
  • Full alignment and concentricity maintained during sleeve installation and machining

These precision tolerances ensured correct bearing load distribution and fully restored the original OEM alignment specifications.

Outcome

The onsite repair successfully restored the stern door hydraulic cylinder hinge pin bores to full OEM specifications within a 1-day repair window, significantly reducing vessel downtime.

By avoiding dismantling and transportation to an external workshop, the client avoided major logistical costs and schedule delays.

Following the successful completion of the project, the client’s confidence in Royce Onsite Machining’s precision onsite capabilities was reinforced, leading to additional project opportunities.
