730mm & 1783mm Steering Tube Bearing Housing Repair
Client: Kongsberg Marine and Shipping
Industry: Marine and Shipbuilding
Location: UK
Duration: Completed within 5 days
Service: Onsite Line Boring, Precision Machining & Sleeve Installation
Overview
Royce Onsite Machining was engaged by Kongsberg Marine and Shipping to carry out a critical onsite line boring and steering tube bearing housing repair on a marine component.
The existing 730 mm bore and 1,783 mm horizontal face had suffered damage and wear, creating a risk of bore misalignment and reduced operational efficiency. The client required the damaged area to be restored to the required OEM specifications while keeping equipment downtime to a minimum.
Royce Onsite Machining removed the damaged bore material, prepared the housing for a replacement sleeve and carried out precision final machining. The replacement sleeve was then line bored to Ø730 mm with an F7 tolerance, achieving a 3.2 Ra surface finish. The horizontal face was also machined, with only the minimum material required removed to restore the damaged surface.
The complete repair was successfully completed onsite within five days, avoiding the need to remove and replace the component and helping to minimise operational downtime.
Work Carried Out
Damage Assessment
- The steering tube bearing housing was inspected to assess the condition of the existing bore and horizontal face.
- Wear and damage affecting the bore condition and alignment were identified.
- Non-destructive testing was carried out to confirm the suitability of the surrounding material for repair.
- The repair methodology was established based on the extent of the damage and the required final OEM dimensions.
Damaged Bore Preparation and Sleeve Installation
- The damaged bore was precision machined onsite, removing 10 mm from the bore diameter to provide a suitable and concentric surface for sleeve installation.
- The damaged horizontal face was machined with the minimum material removal required to achieve a suitable finished surface.
- A new precision-engineered replacement sleeve was installed into the prepared housing.
- The sleeve was secured and prepared for final precision machining.
Final Machining and Verification
- Following sleeve installation, the replacement sleeve was line bored to a final diameter of Ø730 mm.
- The finished bore was machined to an F7 tolerance in accordance with the required specification.
- A final 3.2 Ra surface finish was achieved on the bore.
- Bore alignment, concentricity and final dimensions were checked following machining.
- Final inspection and dimensional verification confirmed that the repaired component met the required OEM limits.
Why Was an 8-Inch Boring Bar Used?
Royce Onsite Machining selected an 8-inch line boring system for the repair because the size and configuration of the steering tube bearing housing required a rigid and stable machining setup capable of maintaining accuracy over the required boring distance.
The boring equipment provided the necessary rigidity and control to carry out precision machining on the large-diameter steering tube bearing housing while working onsite.
Using specialist onsite line boring equipment allowed Royce engineers to machine the component accurately in situ, avoiding the need to remove the large marine component and transport it to a conventional workshop.
This approach helped maintain dimensional accuracy while significantly reducing the logistical requirements and potential downtime associated with component removal.

Outcome
The steering tube bearing housing was successfully repaired onsite within five days, eliminating the need for full component replacement and helping to significantly reduce equipment downtime.
The damaged bore was prepared to accept a new precision-engineered sleeve before being line bored to Ø730 mm with an F7 tolerance. The finished bore achieved the required 3.2 Ra surface finish, while the horizontal face was restored with minimum material removal.
Final dimensional and alignment checks confirmed that the repaired component met the required OEM limits and was ready to return to service.
This project demonstrates Royce Onsite Machining’s ability to undertake high-precision line boring, large-bore machining and sleeve installation on critical marine components, including steering tube bearing housings where accuracy, alignment and minimal downtime are essential.
Why Choose Royce Onsite Machining?
Royce Onsite Machining provides specialist onsite machining solutions that enable critical repairs to be completed without removing large, heavy or difficult-to-transport components from site.
Our experienced engineers can carry out precision line boring, large-bore machining and sleeve installation directly where equipment is located. This can reduce the need for dismantling, transportation and workshop reassembly while helping customers minimise downtime and operational disruption.
For marine and shipbuilding applications, onsite machining provides a practical alternative when component removal is costly, impractical or could result in significant delays to vessel operations.
Is Line Boring an Expensive Repair Method?
Line boring can be a cost-effective alternative to replacing a damaged component or transporting large machinery to an external workshop.
The cost of a line boring repair depends on several factors, including the size and condition of the component, the extent of the damage, the required tolerances, access to the component and the working environment.
Because machining can be carried out onsite, customers can potentially reduce associated costs relating to transportation, dismantling, reassembly and prolonged equipment downtime.
For critical marine machinery, the cost of an onsite line boring repair should therefore be considered alongside the potential cost of component replacement and extended operational downtime.
Does Royce Onsite Machining Have Experience in Marine Line Boring?
Yes. Royce Onsite Machining has extensive experience delivering onsite line boring and precision machining services across demanding industrial applications, including marine and shipbuilding.
Our engineers are experienced in repairing large and critical components where dimensional accuracy, bore alignment and minimal downtime are essential.
Each project is assessed individually to determine the most appropriate repair and machining method. Specialist equipment can then be configured to suit the component, with precision machining, sleeve installation and final dimensional verification carried out onsite to ensure the required engineering and OEM specifications are achieved.
