Comprehensive In-situ Line Boring Services
We have decades of experience delivering in-situ line boring services across a wide range of industries and applications. No matter the size of the component or where you’re located in the world, we provide reliable on-site machining solutions that minimise downtime.
Turbine Casings
Whether you need to remove existing fitted blades from turbine casings or modify grooves to accommodate new blades, Royce Onsite Machining provides the expertise and specialised equipment to complete these complex tasks with accuracy and reliability. Our proven techniques ensure precision machining that meets industry standards and extends the service life of your turbine components.
Rudder Stocks & Pintle Bores
We specialise in in-situ line boring for a wide range of vessel steering components. When dry docking reveals worn rudder stocks or pintle bores, our adaptable line boring systems can be customised to suit nearly any diameter and length, restoring steering mechanisms to full operational condition.
Stern Tubes
Trusted by shipyards worldwide, our portable line boring equipment is designed for large-scale marine machining projects. We handle stern tube bores of all sizes—whether multiple bores in-line or spaced at significant distances—delivering precise and reliable results every time.
Hinge Pin Bores
Our experienced technicians regularly perform line boring services on hinge pin lines for roll-on/roll-off ferry ramp doors. From fitting replacement make-up bushes to restoring bore diameters through spiral welding, we ensure quick and effective repairs that minimise downtime.
Coupling Bolt Holes
Flange couplings are critical in power transmission for rotating machinery. To achieve perfect co-axiality, diameter accuracy, and surface finish, we machine bolt holes on both flanges simultaneously using specialised low-clearance boring machines, ensuring secure and precise flange connections.
Diesel Engine Bedplates
Royce Onsite Machining provides on-site line boring for large diesel engine bedplates and heavy plant that cannot be removed for workshop repair. Repairs are completed to OEM tolerances, often alongside laser alignment, extending equipment life and avoiding costly replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions – Line Boring Machining
What causes line boring damage?
Line boring damage is usually caused by wear, misalignment or excessive loading on bearings and housings over time. Common causes include poor lubrication, bearing failure, vibration, thermal distortion and heavy operational loads.
What size bores can you machine?
We can carry out line boring on a wide range of diameters, typically from around 25mm up to 1000mm, with bore lengths of several metres. Laser alignment is used to ensure accuracy across long distances and multiple bearing positions.
What if the component also needs milling or facing work?
If additional machining is required, line boring can be supported by portable milling or flange facing services. This allows mating faces, housings or mounting surfaces to be restored without moving the equipment.
How quickly can you fix our line boring issues?
We’re available 24/7 to respond to urgent breakdowns and unplanned failures. Our team responds rapidly to emergency repairs and can mobilise quickly to your site, keeping your downtime to an absolute minimum.
